Holy Week

Week of PRayer: April 11th - 15th

As we enter Holy Week each year we set time aside as a community to stop, pause and reflect on the events leading up to Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

We will have resources for each day this week that ALL of us can engage with whether we have prayed before or not. Each resource will be split into three sections depending on how much time you have available. There will be a portion of the Bible to read, a few ideas on what to pray and a section of reflection as we look at our own response.

We will be using the verses that we have been following in the Lent devotional as a church – so if you want to comment on the verses for each day you can still sign up for the Bible plan! Find out more details here: https://www.birminghamvineyard.com/lentplan

Evening Prayer Meetings - 8pm

Each evening (Mon-Fri 8pm - 8:45pm) we will host a short zoom prayer meeting to help us reflect and pray together as a community.

Easter Services

We are hosting services on Good Friday and Easter Sunday and we’d love to see you there!

The resources for each day this week are below, simply click each banner to reveal that days content

Day One - JEsus Sentenced

Getting Started - Around 5 Minutes

Read & Listen

Read John 19:1-16 slowly, out loud.

  • Focus on the 2 verse exchange between Jesus and Pilate v 10 & 11

  • What is the difference in perspective for them both?

  • As you think about your day or a specific situation, is there a truth about God and spiritual realities that Jesus wants to show you?

Pray Your Thoughts

  • Stop and pray about the truths about God that came up.

  • What other feelings have come up?

  • Pray about them and be honest before God.

Guard Your Heart

Look back over your day (or yesterday). Was there anything that drew you away from God? Bring that to God and receive forgiveness as you name it and leave it behind.

Identify any time you were able to involve God in your day or turn to him. Thank Jesus.

Take a little more time - around 10 mins

Read & Listen

Read John 19:1-16 slowly, out loud.

  • What do you most appreciate about who Jesus is in these verses? Give him thanks and praise.

  • Who are the people with apparent power in this story?

  • What is Jesus’ assessment?

  • Can you identify a personal issue or situation where you need a shift of perspective or to ask for spiritual power?

  • Imagine putting on a pair of sunglasses – what is the effect? What sort of “lenses” could you ask Jesus to give you today?

Pray Your Thoughts

  • Writing your prayer may be helpful, or pray them out loud.

  • Pray for a national or international leader to have a growing perspective on true authority and power.

Guard Your Heart

Look back over your day (or yesterday). Was there anything that drew you away from God? Bring that to God and receive forgiveness as you name it and leave it behind.

  • How have they used their power?

  • What is Jesus’ assessment in v 11?

  • Can you identify a personal issue or situation where you need a shift of perspective or to ask for spiritual power?

Pray your thoughts

  • Writing your prayer may be helpful or pray out loud.

  • Pray for a national or international leader to have a growing perspective on the source of true authority and power.

  • At the end of his life, the writer of John’s gospel also records a different glimpse of Jesus in Revelation 1:12 – 18.

  • Compare and contrast how Jesus appears in these verses in John 19: 1-16 and Revelation 1.

  • Respond in worship.

Day TWO - The Mocking of Jesus

Getting started - around 5 mins

Read & Listen

Read Matthew 27:27-31

  • Pause after reading verse 31 – notice the ways they mock Jesus

  • The soldiers were there to mock and ridicule Jesus. They stripped him (humiliation), put a scarlet robe on him (cruel irony of his kingship), put a crown of thorns on his head (kings wear crowns, but not one of torture), agreed in his hand instead of a sceptre (mockery of his kingship), bowed the knee (offered mocking worship) and said ‘Hail, King of the Jews’ (mocking Jesus by greeting him like this, and the Jews – is this the best King they can bring?).

  • What strikes you the most about these actions and mockeries – why?

Pray Your Thoughts

Spend some time praying that the Holy Spirit would help you declare Jesus’ kingship in your life today in what you say and do. That you would know his kingship over your life.

Guard Your Heart

As you reflect on your day (or yesterday) ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you haven’t been as bold to speak of Jesus power, kingship, love and grace. Was there anything today or yesterday which God had for you that you missed? Ask for forgiveness and leave it at the cross.

Identify any time you were able to involve God in your day or turn to him. Thank Jesus.

  • What strikes you the most about these actions and mockeries – why?

  • Listen to Matthew 27:32-44

  • Focus in on verse 35 – ‘When they had crucified him….’

  • It seems like a throwaway comment but Matthew’s readers knew the full horror and brutality of crucifixion.

  • As you think about this verse – let God speak his forgiveness over you, consider those few words – how do they make you feel?

Pray your thoughts

Spend some time praying that the Holy Spirit would help you declare Jesus’ kingship in your life today in what you say and do. That you would know his kingship over your life.

Take some time to meditate on verse 35. Maybe bolden and underline it in your bible. Take time to thank God, the creator of the universe, who had taken on human form, allowed himself to be mocked and executed by those he created for each of us. Amazing and humbling.

Verse 42 has the Pharisees etc. saying that ‘he can’t save himself’ where the opposite was true. Jesus could have if he’d wanted, it was the Pharisees who couldn’t. We too can’t save ourselves, only through Jesus are we saved – take time to thank Jesus for his obedience to the Father and pray that as you go through your day, that you too will have an obedient heart.

Guard Your Heart

As you reflect on your day (or yesterday) ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you haven’t been as bold to speak of Jesus’ power, kingship, love and grace. Was there anything today or yesterday which God had for you that you missed? Ask for forgiveness and leave it at the cross.

Take some time to write down on a piece of paper some of the ways you haven’t followed God during the day. Then as you ask for forgiveness, shred, cut up or burn the paper as a way of symbolising that God remembers it no more.

Identify any time you were able to involve God in your day or turn to him. Thank Jesus for those opportunities.

Day Three - Jesus’ Crucifixion

Getting started - around 5 mins

Read and Listen

Read Luke 23: 39-49 twice, out loud, slowly

  • What phrase, word or sentence sticks out to you the most? Write it down or make a note in your phone.

Pray Your Thoughts

As you take time to pray – reflect back on the phrase, word or sentence which you felt God highlighting to you from the passage.

Take time to pray about this. Consider:

  • Asking God why this was highlighted to you?

  • What (if anything) does God want you to do with it?

  • Is it something that you have never noticed before? Why?

  • How will this phrase, word or sentence impact your day?

Guard Your Heart

Revisit that phrase, word or sentence. As you think about this – how has this impacted your day?
Is it walking with a renewed sense of Jesus’ love for you?
Is it a reminder of something which you have taken for granted or forgotten?
Perhaps it might be a revelation about the death of Jesus, the encounter with the thieves or the centurion’s reaction to Christ’s death?

Read and Listen

Read Luke 23: 39-49 twice, out loud, slowly

  • What phrase, word or sentence sticks out to you the most? Write it down/make a note in your phone.

  • The curtain tore in two (v45b) meaning the barriers that were once in place which prevented people to be in God’s presence are no more – ALL are free to come into God’s presence. What things have you put in the way or are in the way of God’s presence?

Pray Your Thoughts

As you take time to pray – reflect back on the word/phrase/sentence which you felt God highlighting to you from the passage.

Take time to pray about this. Consider:

  • What (if anything) does God want you to do with it?

  • Is it something that you have never noticed before? Why?

  • How will this word/phrase/sentence impact your day?

We will come across people today who will be like either of the thieves, the centurion or the people passing by. Ask God to give you strength, wisdom and boldness to share the good news about Jesus this week and that the Spirit would be convicting hearts as he did with the centurion.

  • The Centurion, a hardened solider, who had seen 100’s of people crucified suddenly has his eyes opened to see that Jesus is the Son of God – and starts praising God! As you read the passage what is your reaction to Jesus’ death?

Pray Your Thoughts

As you take time to pray – reflect back on the word/phrase/sentence which you felt God highlighting to you from the passage.

Get a piece of scrap material, paper or tissue and a pen. In the middle of the material write down all the things that have become barriers to you being with Jesus, hearing from Jesus, doing what Jesus called us to do or anything else you can think of that blocks your relationship with Jesus.

Take some scissors and cut the piece of material in two down the middle. As you do ask God to help you prioritise him, his ways, his plans and his presence.

Day Four - Jesus’ compassion

Getting started - around 5 mins

Read and Listen

John 19: 16 - 27 slowly, out loud

  • Focus on the last few verses as Jesus speaks from the cross to Mary and John.

  • What is Jesus doing?

  • We are called to do what Jesus did – how do these verses challenge you?

Pray your thoughts

Stop and pray.

Thank Jesus for His love and compassion, even in the midst of His own terrible suffering.

Ask Him where you are being called to show compassion today.

Guard your heart

Look at verses 23 and 24. The soldiers are callous, focussed on their own possible material gain, rather than the suffering that they have just inflicted.

Ask God to soften your heart, and show you anywhere that your focus is on material possessions rather than compassion for others.

Take a little more time - around 10 mins

Read and Listen

John 19: 16 - 27 slowly, out loud

  • What strikes you about these verses?

  • Who looks like they have power?

  • Who is really in control?

  • Can you identify a personal situation where God looks at things totally differently to the way it looks to the world (or to you)?

  • Can you see that situation God’s way, or are there things, challenges, maybe pain, which is getting in the way?

Pray your thoughts

Listen to the worship song “Hosanna”

or read through the lyrics

Focus on the last few lines as your prayer, and listen for God’s answer.

Guard your heart

Think about your life at the moment, and any situation which feels difficult, and bigger than you. How does that make you feel?

Ask God to shine His light in your heart, and chase away any darkness or fear.

  • Read the following poem:

Three Mary’s Weep

Constant in companionship
Hardly finding one without the other.
They laughed, they wondered
And they wept,
Together.

Their commonality? A boy
Whom they saw grow up, indeed
Had helped to raise. Mother,
Aunty and friend,
To Him.

But what to them?
A courageous calamity?
But then Saturday and Sunday
Were still to come!
To you?

  • Who around you needs someone to weep with?

  • Is there someone you can come alongside to be with in their sadness, and gently encourage to look forward to the hope of Sunday?

Pray your thoughts

Day Five - Jesus’ Death

Getting started - around 5 mins

Read & Listen

Read John 19:28-42 (Jesus’ death) slowly, out loud

  • Jesus had followed his Father’s will, knowing the full reality of the agony, distress and abandonment that lay before him.

  • In this passage, Jesus, knowing he has done all he had been called to do, now stops and gives up His spirit.

Pray your thoughts

What has God called you to do? What have you yet to do?

Ask God to show you if there is anything left to do, and ask for God to strengthen you to complete it.

 Guard your heart

Think about the past week. Where do you feel that God has given you the strength and wisdom this week? Thank God.

Take a little more time - around 10 mins

Read & Listen

Read John 19:28-42 (Jesus’ death) slowly, out loud

Read this poem

Jesus

Stand or kneel at the foot of the cross
With eyes wide open.
Tell me what you see as you look down.
A planted wooden post?
Now tell me what you feel as thoughts begin to form.
A warm splash.
From where did that come?
Brushing it aside you see its colour, red.
You realise it’s blood.
Not yours, but His.
And there’s the clue.
It’s all for you.
And me.

Written by Bill Dixon

  • Jesus had followed his Father’s will, knowing the full reality of the agony, distress and abandonment that lay before him.

  • In this passage, Jesus, knowing he has done all he had been called to do, now stops and gives up His spirit.

Pray your thoughts

Jesus submitted His all to His Father.
Ask God in prayer to show you a situation that you are facing at the moment that you find challenging and difficult.
Ask God to highlight an area where you still need to fully submit to God in this situation.
Is it anger or unforgiveness, your finances, anxiety etc…?

Use this time to kneel down (if you are able) and in this posture of submission, ask God to forgive you.
Ask God to help you let go and entrust it to God. Ask God for wisdom to understand what you need to do, and what you need to leave to God.

Guard your heart

Look back over your week. Was there a time when you asked God to help? Ask God to show you where He was in this situation.

Thank Jesus and ask Him to help you remember to keep asking for help, and to submit to His will in the coming weeks.
